On Describing Comics

I describe the Broodhollow comics for my friend Zack, which in this case means that I translate them from images to text, adding descriptions of the background, the characters' actions and body language and the way the comic is presented. (I take the term from described movies, which add descriptions of the action onscreen to the audio track.) I've been describing the strips since the very beginning, and I've also described the comic book Watchmen.

Spoilers for both Broodhollow and Watchmen follow.

For stories like Broodhollow and Watchmen, where small details often turn out to be important later on in the story, I believe that a blind or low vision reader should be able to access all of the relevant information a sighted reader gets. This …

Need help with a profanity policy

This is going to stay open for a while because I want to get the input from a few people before I finalize anything and create a policy.

Most of the wikis I am involved with are for kids' TV shows and movies. As such, there's basically no swearing in them, or if there is, it's the lowest end of the scale, such as "damn" or "hell". Those wikis have profanity listed as one of the things you can be blocked for. It's helped keep things in order.

There's very little profanity so far in Broodhollow. "Join The Club" where Zane is introduced to the Skull and Shovels society is the only one I can think of right now, and that's more of a chant and ritual than a profanity. I don't know if Kris is going to keep the series fairly clean, but since this is …

Constant Vigilance on article comments

One of the features that Wikia has is Article Comments. They appear at the bottom of each article. It lets people participate who might otherwise not if they feel they have to formally discuss things on a separate Talk page.

Another wikia I'm a part of decided not to have them because it is about a children's show and typically you don't get a lot of high quality comments from very young kids. Not that they can't do that (the show itself keeps in mind that children are smarter than many people think) and we weren't expecting college-level thoughts and ideas, but realized we probably wouldn't get much that actually helped improve the page. We also wanted to avoid a situation that happened on other wikias where we could see that most of the a…

Extra, Extra! Bunny seeks to adopt wiki!

Once again, I find myself in a familiar position, and yet, this time it's unique.

Most of the wikis I have adopted over the past two years have out of necessity. I would put a lot of effort into cleaning up vandalism and then needed to adopt the wiki to keep it from coming back. In other cases, I was promoted to admin and sometimes also a bureaucrat as thanks for that cleanup. For a few of both cases, I wound up being an admin of a wiki that I have very little in common with. I keep watch over those wikis to ensure that if there is any vandalism, it's dealt with, but I just don't have the ability to make them flourish because they are so far away from my interests.

It's been a very long time since I adopted a wiki because I was genuinely int…
