|Book 2: Angleworm||Page 44: If Memory Serves||
The background is white.
- Panel 1
Zane, still in his pajamas, quickly flips his diary open to the last entry and places it on the table in front of him. The right page is blank, and the left page has a couple of sentences and a simplified sketch of Maris in Zane's dream, with a large hole in his chest. Zane says "We have to share this with Dr. Angstrom, Mercy! But my next appointment isn't until *tomorrow*..."
- Panel 2.
Zane continues, "Today is White Lamentation, and if memory serves, tomorrow is the cleaning holiday Edulcoration." He straightens up, a pleased look on his face, and says "Ha ha! Quote if memory serves unquote! *It does this time!*" Short yellow lines coming from his face show the force of his realization. Mercy, clinging to his back, stretches out one wing.
- Panel 3.
Zane, sitting back down and writing with a pen, says "That means until tomorrow, our job is to write down everything we remember, Mercy!" He looks troubled as he continues "There *were* giant bats! And... The Bottlefly Boys fought them off for me!" Mercy, sitting on his arm, looks at him as if she's listening. Edit July 9, 2014: In the background are silhouettes of the items on one of the antique shop's long, thin tables, including a small lamp and several small boxes. There's a mirror standing by the table, tilted towards Zane.
- Panel 4.
Zane, looking increasingly troubled, continues as he writes, "And there was... something about a mirror... and the Harker House? At night?" In smaller type, he continues "Oh, Mercy, I've lost so much." Mercy looks down, as if she's reading what he's writing.
- Panel 5.
Zane, touching the tip of his pen to his lips, says "But maybe I can get it *back* now! As long as I write it down... It's as simple as that!" He looks disturbed, raising his eyebrow and pursing his lips, and continues "Is it really as simple as that? *Can't* be as simple as that." Beside him, Mercy hovers with her wings outstretched.
- Panel 6.
Zane, still clutching the pen, looks suddenly very concerned, saying "What if... Iris' dad and Maris both figured out the pattern?" In smaller type, he continues "Please let it not be as simple as *that*." Mercy flaps her wings beside him, making a soft "eeeeee" noise.
